Welcome at CUMILA
CUMILA stands for Curriculum guide of media and information literacy for Adults.
Digital media have become an integral part of everyday life. However, in addition to the many advantages and opportunities, the digital world also harbours risks and dangers. In the age of smartphones, social media, fake news and disinformation, it is essential to understand the functional principles and mechanisms of the internet and digital media.
Adults need to learn how to navigate the digital world in a self-determined and responsible manner. CUMILA includes a curriculum for teaching media and information literacy to adults. The CUMILA curriculum defines the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve a minimum level of media literacy.

Who is CUMILA aimed at?
CUMILA is initially aimed at teachers in adult and vocational education who want to conduct a learning unit in the field of media and information literacy as part of their work. But in principle, CUMILA can be used by anyone who works with youths, young adults or adults in general. Be it youth social workers, trainers, teachers or also committed people from associations or other institutions.
CUMILA is suitable for the preparation and implementation of individual events or also more extensive teaching offers. Parts of CUMILA can also be integrated into existing offers and curricula.
The documents with the fundamental basic knowledge can also be used by self-learners for self-study.
What does CUMILA offer?
The core of the project is a sample curriculum that serves as a basis and orientation for setting up one's own courses or organising self-study. For a better overview, the complex subject area was divided into a total of 6 independent modules. There is a separate document for each module in which all the important knowledge of the respective subject area is explained. The modules are suitable for self-study as well as for use in lesson preparation or for the creation of own teaching materials.

The basic modules - Everything you need to know!
For each topic area there is a document that provides the basic knowledge on the respective topic. This document serves as a technical basis. Based on this knowledge, a sample syllabus has been built for each topic area.
The syllabus defines a possible implementation of the topic within the framework of a course. It defines the individual learning units and learning parts. These can also be used separately. Each learning unit contains information for the learner, refers to further materials and shows the underlying competences.
The CUMILA Wiki
Individual learning units and teaching materials exist for each topic area and are freely available. Teachers and people from the education sector can use these freely to organise their own teaching units. All learning materials are organised in a wiki system. Those who wish can also publish their own learning materials via the system and make them available to others.
How can I use CUMILA?
The use of CUMILA materials is free of charge. They are published under a Creative Commons licence.
CUMILA can be used in different ways:
- Teachers can take the complete curriculum (or parts of it) and implement it 1:1. The syllabus defines the learning units and refers to the corresponding exercises in the Wiki system.
- Teachers can use individual exercises from the CUMILA project in their courses.
- Interested parties can acquire missing knowledge or refresh their existing knowledge through the basic modules.
The free Moodle course
For all those who would first like to delve deeper into individual topics, we have created a free Moodle course to accompany the CUMILA modules. The course helps you to work through the topics in a structured way. In this way, they can also familiarise themselves with individual topics in a targeted manner. There is also a short test at the end of each chapter.
No registration is necessary for the Moodle course.
