Recognising phishing

This lesson introduces and discusses some phishing examples.

Preparation

To carry out this, access to an e-mail box is necessary.

Method / Process description

"Phishing" describes the attempt to gain our trust in order to obtain our personal data or other information that we would never disclose under other circumstances. Mainly in the form of fraudulent messages pretending to be other people or institutions. But it also refers to websites or services.

This lesson focuses on phishing emails. These are dangerous in that they copy emails from other bodies such as banks or service companies, sometimes barely recognisable as fake. It is important that learners are aware of the danger of such emails and under no circumstances click on individual links in the relevant emails

The worksheet shows individual steps for carrying out this lesson. This is done in two steps:

  • Awareness: Show an example of a phishing email.
  • Identification: Recognise phishing emails in your own mailbox (spam folder).

The lesson can be linked to a discussion on related topics:

  • What can we do if we have given personal information to a fraudulent website, such as credit card information or personal data (address, ID card...)?
  • Other dangers related to the use of the internet or the installation of software (e.g. viruses) and how to protect ourselves against them
  • Brainstorming about risks in other physical media such as text messages (SMS) / communication services such as WhatsApp, etc.
