The value of my data

Raising awareness of the value of one's own personal data

Preparation

All you need to prepare is a PC and an internet connection. Alternatively, this exercise can also take place on a tablet or smartphone

Method / Process description

1. Research: How much is my personal data worth?

The participants should research the value of their own data. How much is data or individual data sets worth? For this purpose, different search strategies are pursued, which can be worked out individually or in a team. The results are then presented and discussed.

Suggestions for search criteria:

  • Search for articles and blog posts on the topic with the following search terms: "the value of my data", "data brokers", "buying data", "costs of data sets", "raw material data", ....
  • Research the turnover figures of companies and internet providers whose services are free of charge for the end customer (e.g. large social networks). How do these companies earn their money?

2. Further research & discussion

  • Should the processing of personal data be restricted in principle? Or under what conditions would processing and also long-term storage be appropriate?
  • In 2010, the following sentence was coined in a comment on the news service digg.com: "If you are not paying for it, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold." To what extent is this statement still relevant today? And is this statement justified at all?
  • What is behind the term "data sovereignty"?
