Smart home for smarter living?!

Smart living in the smart home will become standard for many in the future. Smart home is becoming more and more attractive and networks intelligent components, devices and systems with each other. Smart devices are becoming the smart home, regulating areas such as energy management, entertainment and communication, building and home security, health and wellness, and home automation and comfort within private living spaces and environments.

This exercise explores the topic of the smart home, specifically the advantages, disadvantages, and dangers that can arise from implementing such systems.

Preparation

All that is needed for preparation is a PC, smartphone and an Internet connection to look up information from the Internet.

  • Cards with statements on the topic of smart home to survey, collect and bundle existing knowledge.
  • The exercise sheets serve as additional support and stimulation.

Method / Process description

The teacher asks the participants to form a circle of chairs and places cards with statements on the topic of smart homes on the floor in the middle of the circle of chairs. The cards are placed so that the statements are not visible (upside down).

The participants now take one card each and will present and discuss these statements in plenary. The teacher takes on the role of moderator and can also note down important arguments on the board, flipchart, etc. that should be explained in more detail later.

With intelligent room control, such as perfect shading can save energy.Many devices can be controlled from work. The washing machine is then always ready when you get home.

Smart home is not cheap and not all devices are compatible with each other. That can quickly become even more expensive.What benefits can smart home devices offer for age-friendly living?

Floor sensors for more safety in old age. Floor sensors can be used to determine where people are in the home and whether they have fallen and need help.Smart Home also changes the job market! Which professions could be eliminated, which could be added?

Afterwards, the participants have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in the form of Internet research.

The participants should first draw their own conclusions from their observations from the discussion and then clarify these through Internet research. 

A questionnaire could also be provided to give some guidance to learners who lack initiative.

  • Which smart home device providers are there in your area?
  • What do the providers of smart home devices promise on their websites?
  • What offers are there? Create a mind map for the following categories: Energy Management, Entertainment and Communication, Building and Home Security, Health and Wellness, Home Automation and Comfort;
  • What dangers might users/users of smart home devices face?
  • What would be of interest to your apartment/house? 
  • What Devices would be of help to you now or in the future?
  • If you were to realize all your smart home wishes, how much would it cost you?
  • At what point would your investment pay for itself?
