Communicating via online communication channels - etiquette, netiquette, chatiquette

The range of online communication channels is diverse and the form of language used varies depending on the communication channel - but the choice of words should always be in keeping with netiquette.

This exercise deals with the topic of "Netiquette and Chatiquette on the Internet" and is intended to sensitize participants to adapt their communication content and the way they communicate to the various communication channels.

Preparation

All that is needed for preparation is a PC, smartphone and an Internet connection to look up information from the Internet.

Lecture on the topic "Publication of personal pictures and data on the net". The lecture should explain the following keywords:

  • Definition: netiquette and chatiquette
  • Presentation of general communication rules on the Internet

The exercise sheets serve as additional support and stimulation.

Method / Process description

A short input on the topic of netiquette and chatiquette on the Internet can be useful as an introduction to the topic. Alternatively, an article could be provided or a YouTube video could be shown as an intro.

This could be followed by a short intro discussion on the topic of communicating online.

The following questions could stimulate the discussion:

  • What are your experiences online on communication channels that you use?
  • How do people communicate with each other (even though they don't know each other personally)?
  • What do you feel about this?
  • What would you never do?
  • On which topics do communication participants tend to lose their composure?

Following this, have participants get into groups and work through and summarize the following questions.

Research the Internet and find out about communication options offered by the following applications:

WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, XING; Answer the following questions and give examples:

  • Briefly describe the target audience.
  • What messages are conveyed?
  • How are texts designed?
  • What topics are addressed?
  • How do people interact on controversial topics?
  • Which applications are used more privately and which more professionally?

After the participants have solved their tasks in the group, each group is to go together with another group and compare their results and jointly design a new paper. This is repeated until a joint poster/handout is created, i.e. all groups become one. This exercise takes time, encourages communication and reflection.

Afterwards, all participants are asked to create their own personal netiquette rules with at least 12 rules.

The participants have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, to research on the Internet and to obtain additional information.

The participants should first draw their own conclusions from their observations and then take these into account in the netiquette regulations.
