Pictures on the web - more than 1000 words

In this exercise, participants learn about the meaning and impact of images and words they post on the web. By posting images and words, participants send and receive a lot of information and data. This should be done with care.

Preparation

Lecture on the topic "Publication of personal images and data on the net".

The lecture should explain the following keywords:

  • How do images work?
  • How do we perceive images?
  • Which images and data can cause problems in a professional context?
  • Can images and data on the Net be deleted?

The exercise sheets serve as additional support and stimulation.

Method / Process description

To introduce the topic, a short input about images on the web is given. Alternatively, an article could be provided or a Youtube video could be shown as an intro. Later, the work assignments are handed out.

These exercises can be done in different settings:

Variant A

As joint group work in plenary under the guidance of the teacher. The teacher goes through the exercises together with the participants. An analysis of the results and discussion about the observations takes place in the plenary during the execution.

Variation B

As group work, in which individual groups work on the topic in parallel using the exercise sheets. The individual groups are encouraged to exchange their experiences and observations. At the end of the exercise at the latest, a discussion about the experiences and observations of all groups should take place in the plenum.

Variation C

As individual work: Each participant works out the topic on the basis of the exercise sheets. After each exercise, the teacher can hold a short discussion about the experiences and observations.

Analysis of various images published on the Internet

Task 1: The participants use the worksheet to familiarize themselves with the halo effect in order to reflect on images on the Internet.
Participants are asked to consider the following questions:

  • Search the Internet for the halo effect and address the following questions:
  • What is meant by the Halo Effect?
  • Can you recall situations in your life that you can associate with the Halo Effect?

The participants should present their results in the form of a handout and design the handout in such a way that in the middle of the handout there is a kind of speech bubble with the explanation of the Halo Effect and those situations are arranged around it like a kind of mind map which you can assign to the Halo Effect? You are to create the handout using the tools available on the wiki at wiki.cumila.eu.

Task 2: How can images be analyzed? As a recipient of images, what insights will I pay special attention to in the future?
Ask participants to consider the following questions:

  • Search the Internet for associations that have the goal of uncovering fake news/fake images.
  • Search for fake pictures related to the Corona epidemic.
  • Search for "Russian history - manipulated images" on the Internet and discuss the "power" of those images in plenary.
  • Consider the ways in which photo montages, photo combinations, image cropping, lighting conditions, and angles can manipulate the image message.

Participants should work through the topic and present their findings in the form of a slide presentation.

TIP: Participants can find a selection of tools for slide presentations in the wiki at wiki.cumila.eu.

Following this, each participant, alone or in groups, will create information on the topic. Afterwards, participants will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and obtain additional information in a discussion round. Participants should first draw their own conclusions from their observations and then share them with the group.

Possible questions for the discussion group:

  • What is meant by the halo effect? Discuss experiences!
  • Which associations/organizations uncover fake news or fake images?
  • Discuss the term "the power of images - viewed historically".
  • How do I want to appear to others - how do I actually appear // Self-image - external image?
