Social media - I'll be online for a moment!

Around half of the world's population (depending on the statistics, the figures vary by up to 5 percent) uses social networks and spends almost 2.5 hours a day on them.

This exercise is designed to encourage learners to reflect on their social media usage patterns and how they influence society.

Preparation

All you need to prepare is a PC, smartphone and an Internet connection to look up information from the Internet.

Lecture on the topic of "social media". The lecture should explain the following keywords:

  • Social media a historical review.
  • Definition
  • Statistics on which social media platforms are most commonly used.

The exercise sheets serve as additional support and encouragement.

Method / Process description

The participants are given the task of familiarizing themselves with the topic of social media.

A short input about social media will be given as an introduction to the topic. This should point out how social media developed into what it is today and influence, different definition approaches as well as statistics, which social media platforms are used most often.

After a short intro by the teacher, a worksheet is handed out, which should encourage the participants to look at their own usage behavior, their own online time in social media.

The participants consider the following points:

  • How often am I on social media?
  • Which social media do I use?
  • What do I use social media for?
  • Is social media more of a curse or a blessing for me?
  • Etc.

Afterwards, participants discuss their personal results in plenary.

TIP:

  • As homework, the teacher could ask the participants to keep a diary about their use of social media.
  • At the same time, the participants could note not only how long they spent on which social media, but also the extent to which they benefited from it or not.

Afterwards, the participants should compare and discuss their results with other participants. The participants should first draw their own conclusions from their observations from the discussion with the others. Subsequently, the effects of the use of social media on society are to be analyzed.

The teacher has several options in this regard:

Option A: The teacher hands out texts that are to be worked through in groups.

Option B: The teacher asks the participants to research information on the Internet.

Variant C: The teacher presents studies on this topic and then discusses them with the participants.

Variation D: The teacher poses the question and everyone participates in the discussion ad hoc and refers to experiences made.

The participants should first draw their own conclusions from their observations from the discussion with the others.
