Verifying information

How can we assess the value of information? What criteria can we use to verify information in order to classify it?

Preparation

All you need to prepare is a PC and an internet connection. Alternatively, this exercise can also take place on a tablet or smartphone.

Method / Process description

In this exercise, the participants should understand the criteria according to which they can check or classify information. The fact sheet serves as a support.

Introduction:

  • The criteria of the fact sheet are worked out together with the participants (or presented to them).
  • Individual aspects are discussed and deepened.

Implementation

  • The participants are asked to carry out the test on a single website as an example. (Note: It is advisable to check rather unknown sources and not a common well-known news site).
  • According to the information sheet, the following should be checked:
  • Statement, topicality, classification of the information
  • Background of the source (website and author)
  • Final classification of the information and the source.
  • Tip: The research can be done alone or in groups.

Conclusion

  • The individual results of the check can be briefly presented to the plenary. What was checked. How was it checked? What is the result.
  • Did the review of the information reveal any important findings?
