Knowing your device

In case you already own a smartphone or tablet, or your colleague or friend has one if you want to buy one, it is good to familiarise yourself with the features.

Preparation

At least one end device is needed for this exercise. It does not matter whether this is a smartphone, tablet or laptop. If more than one device is available, their values can be compared.

As preparation, fundamental basic knowledge of technology should be available. As preparation, it is advisable to read the chapters on hardware and software in the module "Technology" to familiarise yourself with the most important terms and units.

Method / Process description

In the first step, the basic information (memory, performance, software version) of the end device is identified. The participants are then encouraged to take a closer look at the specifications. This can be done by sharing and comparing the existing device specifications or by searching the internet for newer models or known problems of the devices.

The focus is on exploring one's own device and building an understanding of how the individual factors affect the use of the device.

Research into new models and the associated comparison with more powerful or newer versions should also be encouraged. Likewise, understanding how model numbers or other technical information can support internet research (e.g. when looking for support with technical problems or concrete instructions for specific problems).
