Hands-on Web-Based Learning
The internet offers millions of learning opportunities but it is often hard to find suitable offers. In this lesson participants have to opportunity to try out various formats of web-based learning. They also get assistance finding suitable offers.
Method / Process description
The lesson combines practical exercises with group discussions and inputs.
- Input: Give a short introduction to the types and opportunities of online and web-based learning (Module 6 > 6.1. Introducing Children to Digital Skills > Learning > Media-Based Learning).
- Flashlight: Let each participant quickly report what experiences they have made with web-based training.
- Exercise: You can perform this exercise either in class or let the participants do it as a preparation homework before the lesson. The participants try out various methods of online instructions. Here are ideas for topics and materials:

- Group discussion: Discuss with the group how they experienced the various formats:
- What was their favorite format?
- What are the benefits of each format?
- What are the problems of each format?
- Exercise: As an example for web-based learning participants will start an online language training at http://www.mondly.com No registration or fees are required to start, so participants can easily enter the interactive training. When they passed the basic instructions they find the first free lessons in the upper left corner. Give participants the following instructions:
- Select a foreign language that you do not speak yet.
- Follow the instructions for beginners.
- Learn how to introduce yourself in the new language or learn a simple sentence.
- Group discussion:
- Everybody says the sentence he or she just learnt and says which language it is.
- How do participants feel about this way of learning?
- How did they learn languages in the past?
- For which topics could trainings like these be suitable in their professional or private life?
- Reflection:
- Let participants summarize what web-based training methods they liked best.
- Does anybody pick up foreign language training again after the exercise?
- Let particpants gather 3 examples of web-based trainings for their domain.
- Let participants gather 3 examples of web-based trainings that could be suitable for their children
