My pictures on the net

This exercise deals with the effect of images on the web. Many people know how images work and what messages they can send. But what about images, graphics, emojis and the like that you send and post on the web? How are your images perceived? Do the image of yourself and the image of others match?

Preparation

  • All that is required for preparation is a PC and an Internet connection. Alternatively, this exercise can also take place on a tablet or smartphone.
  • The exercise sheets serve as additional support and stimulation

Method / Process description

After the teacher has introduced the task of "analyzing a wide variety of published personal images on the Internet", the participants get together in groups of two.

The goal is to analyze a wide variety of published personal images on the Internet. This exercise is best done in pairs. Smaller settings are better, especially for exercises with feedback on the participants themselves, so that they can work together more openly. A lot of trust is needed here.

Then the worksheet is handed out.

The task is as follows:

Show the participant a picture that you have published of yourself on an online communication channel. That participant should now describe neutrally what he/she sees and then what feelings he/she feels when he/she sees the picture.
The participants are asked to consider the following questions:

  • Do I perceive this picture the same way?
  • If not, do I want it to convey this message?
  • How will this perception affect future publications on the web?

Afterwards, participants should take/make a photo of themselves and write a short post. The post should represent the topic of this unit.

The photos should be edited using an image editing tool that can be done on a cell phone.

TIP: An image editing tool is available on the wiki at wiki.cumila.eu.

The pictures and the post contribution will be discussed and evaluated in plenary afterwards.

The participants have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and obtain additional information and should first draw their own conclusions from their observations and then share them with the group.
