Dealing with images

When may I use or even publish which images? What do I have to pay attention to? And where can I get images that I can use without hesitation?

Preparation

This exercise focuses on how to deal with images on the internet. If the exercise is offered as a stand-alone exercise, it is advisable to at least give a short introduction to the topic of "rights of use and copyrights" as suggested in the previous exercise.

The basic knowledge can be found in the corresponding chapter in our CUMILA manual. In the exercise description you will also find links to further information.

Method / Process description

The following description is intended as a suggestion for a teaching unit.

There are a total of 3 components in which the learners should deal with individual aspects of the use of visual material. As the topic is quite extensive, it is up to the teacher to adapt the scope and depth of the unit to the group.

Basics

Image rights and the right to one's own image

  • Introductory question: "What do I have to consider when using photos?"
  • Participants are asked about their knowledge of image rights. Feedback can be collected. Any open questions are noted down.
  • The teacher explains to the learners what they need to be aware of when using pictures. The "Image Rights Checklist" can be used here.
  • Further information:

Freedom of panorama

  • Introductory question: "Are we allowed to photograph everything we see in public space?", "What rights could be violated?
  • Afterwards, the leaflet on the topic of freedom of panorama can be handed out and discussed.
  • Then the learners are given the task of researching on the internet whether there are special exceptions to the freedom of panorama.
  • The search term "panorama freedom eiffel tower" can be used here.
    • "While photos of the world-famous steel tower may be published at any time, there is a ban on night-time illumination. The reason is the artistic value of the light spectacle: While the rights of tower builder Gustave Eiffel expired 70 years after his death in 1993, this freedom of exploitation does not apply at night. This is because Pierre Bideau only switched on the light show in 1985, during which time there is a ban on photo publication." [...] ""But now the good news: [...] the copyright notice is sufficient for private use.""

Exercise Image Rights

  • The learners should draw their own decision tree based on what they have learned. The worksheet "Exercise Decision Tree" serves as a basis.

"Royalty-free" images?

  • Introductory question: "Can I use any image from the Internet? - In this case, the teachers' answer should be unanimously "no", because the copyright holder has not granted any right of use for the image in question. This serves as a transition to the presentation of common image databases on the internet.
  • The teacher briefly introduces the principle of image databases.
  • Afterwards, the learners are asked to evaluate the provisions of individual image databases. What are the conditions for using the images? Is the use free of charge? Does a copyright notice have to be added when using the images?
  • The worksheet "Exercise on image databases" can be used for implementation.
