E-learning - offerings and their history

E-learning is synonymous with all learning offers that are possible due to new media such as digital learning platforms, learning content provided in multimedia form, etc. and can be seen as an extension of conventional forms of learning.

This exercise deals with the topic of e-learning and compares advantages and disadvantages of e-learning. Furthermore, advantages and disadvantages should not be taken as given, but should be considered from different perspectives.

Preparation

All that is needed for preparation is a PC, smartphone and an Internet connection to look up information from the Internet.

Method / Process description

The teacher briefly introduces the topic of the lesson "E-learning offerings and their history" and begins with an activation exercise.

The learners are given an exercise sheet on which there are sentence starters. These could be as follows:

Variant A: The participants should complete these sentences individually.

Variant B: The participants should complete these sentences in plenary.

Afterwards, a short discussion can be held to go into more detail about the statements made. This exercise serves as an introduction to the topic of e-learning. The participants should first draw their own conclusions from their observations from the discussion. 

Afterwards, the teacher shows how to create a presentation and a quiz.

Afterwards, the participants should work individually on an assigned topic to develop a learning unit and create a presentation. This should include at least one link to an explanatory video and a quiz.

This should provide the participants with the following content:

  • How can learning units be created using digital tools?
  • What should be considered when creating e-learning units?
  • Examination of the topic of e-learning

Topics for the learning units to be created could be the following:

  • History of e-learning
  • Advantages and disadvantages of e-learning 
  • What is meant by e-learning
  • What is meant by blended learning

This exercise can be offered in individual, pair or group work.
