Hate Speech

Why do people discuss things differently online? Online, swear words seem to slip across the keyboard more quickly than they do across the lips.

This exercise is designed to take a closer look at the topic of "hate speech," especially the factors that promote it.

Preparation

All you need to prepare is a PC, smartphone and an Internet connection to look up information from the Internet.

Lecture on the topic of "Hate Speech". The lecture should explain the following keywords:

  • Disinhibition Effects
  • Factors that promote this disinhibition (invisibility, asynchrony, ...)
  • Definition: Hate Speech

The exercise sheets serve as additional support and stimulation.

Method / Process description

The participants are given the task of familiarizing themselves with the topic of hate speech.

A short input on the topic of "hate speech" is given as an introduction. The aim is to point out factors why inhibitions are lost more quickly on the Internet and statements that hurt other people are more likely to be made than in face-to-face conversations.

The teacher divides the group into groups. Different settings are possible depending on the size of the group:

Variant A: Each participant works on all topics.

Variant B: Not all participants work on one topic.

Variant C: The participants are divided into groups and each group works on one topic.

Then the following topics are worked on:

  • What are the forms of Hate Speech?
  • How does Hate Speech affect our society?
  • Can Hate Speech be legally prosecuted?
  • What help does social media offer to report hate speech?

Participants can research this on the Internet.

The information should be compiled and then elaborated in the form of an interview (question and answers).

After the compulsory program, the more advanced program could follow::

  • These interviews could then be recorded with a cell phone or, if available, with a voice recorder.
  • Afterwards, the participants could cut and edit these interviews with a cutting program.
  • The results could also be published on the social media of the training institute. (Pay attention to DSVGO!)

In this regard, the teacher explains in a unit how an audio-cut program works.

TIP: Tools for editing an audio file are available in the wiki at wiki.cumila.eu.
