Hate Speech - Who is behind it?

This exercise deals with the "haters" and tries to decipher the arguments of the "haters". 

Preparation

All you need to prepare is a PC, smartphone and an Internet connection to read up on information from the Internet.

Lecture on the topic "Hate Speech - Who is behind it". The lecture should explain the following keywords:

  • Forms of Hate Speech
  • Who is Hate Speech directed against?
  • How do haters argue?

The exercise sheets serve as additional support and stimulation.

Method / Process description

The participants are given the task of familiarizing themselves with the topic of hate speech. 

A short input about hate speech is given as an introduction to the topic. The aim is to point out how perpetrators argue on the Internet.

After a short intro by the teacher, a worksheet with 2 tasks is handed out.

The participants work on the following topics:

  • Who is behind hate speech?
  • Which groups is hate speech directed against?
  • How do haters argue?

The task sheet contains text passages that address the questions explained in the intro lecture in order to be able to work on the task better.

In Task 1, the participants have to find statements in social media and on the Internet and assign which type of discrimination is given.

Then, in Task 2, the participants should make a table and write an example of hate speech in the first column, who these atrocious statements are directed against in the second column, and what the intention behind this form of hate speech is in the third column.

Examples of intentions can be taken from this grid.

Afterwards, the participants should compare and discuss their results with others.

The teacher does not moderate this sequence and only intervenes to correct.

The participants should first draw their own conclusions from their observations from the discussion with the others.
