Protecting against and dealing with bullies

Cyberbullying attacks can affect anyone. There are many motives for bullies (envy, racist reasons, etc.).

In this exercise, learners are asked to consider how to protect themselves from and deal with such attacks.

Preparation

All you need to prepare is a PC, smartphone and an Internet connection to look up information from the Internet.

Lecture on the topic "Cyberbullying". The lecture should explain the following keywords:

  • Definition of cyberbullying
  • Legal regulations
  • Dealing with bullies (short discussion in plenary to approach the topic)

The exercise sheets serve as additional support and stimulation.

Method / Process description

The participants are given the task of familiarizing themselves with the topic of cyberbullying.

To introduce the topic, a short input about cyberbullying and the legal requirements, how bullies can be prosecuted, is given. Here, reference could be made to individual cases that have already been adjudicated in court. After this short intro by the teacher, the question: "How should one react to cyberbullying attacks?" is briefly discussed. After 3 - 5 minutes of discussion, the teacher hands out a worksheet.

Participants work on the following topics:

  • What is the best way to protect myself from cyberbullying?
  • How do I respond to bullies?
  • Where can I turn to get help?
  • The setting of the exercise can be pair work or group work.

Group work/variant A: all groups work on all topics.

Group work/variant B: Three groups are formed and each group works on different issues.

Participants are asked to prepare a guide for each issue and briefly discuss it with the other groups, adding to it if necessary. The teacher does not moderate this sequence and only intervenes to correct.

Participants should first draw their own conclusions based on their observations from the discussion with the others.

Additional exercise:

Following this, all groups can create an informational brochure that includes all of the findings related to the questions that were developed.

For this purpose, the participants can use a Content Creativity Tool, which is available in the wiki at wiki.cumila.eu. It is up to the groups how they design the information brochure.
