Information sources on the Internet
What types of information sources are there? Which concrete websites and web offers can be used as a source of information? What are the advantages and what risks do they bring?
Preparation
The worksheet "Information Sources on the Internet" is intended to support the first part of this exercise and can be used for preparation.
The worksheet "Source Analysis" should be printed out for the participants in order to be distributed at the latest during step 3
Method / Process description
In this exercise the participants will get to know and evaluate different sources of information. The exercise is done in individual steps, although some parts of the exercise can also be summarized and abbreviated.
Step 1: Discussion and collection of first sources
The unit starts with a discussion about different sources of information on the Internet. Different types of sources or specific websites are collected and briefly discussed. The mentioned sources can be clustered directly. The worksheet "Information sources on the Internet" can be used as a target picture.
Question for this exercise:
- What are the sources of information? (besides search engines)
- What types of offers are available for information searches?
- Which specific websites are possibly visited regularly?
- Here you can also ask who provides the information. So: Who is behind the source?
Step 2: Create list with source
Based on the initial collection of individual sources, the participants are now to search for further services. The goal is to find further websites and services for the individual source types. The source types listed in the worksheet "Information Sources on the Internet" can be used as a basis. This part of the exercise can be abbreviated by directly presenting or distributing the list of sources.
Task:
- Search for further websites and web offerings for the individual source types.
Step 3: Collect and discuss advantages and disadvantages
After different sources have been identified, the next step is to test and evaluate individual sources. Using the worksheet "Source Analysis", individual sources are to be evaluated. Ideally, this is followed by a short presentation of the results or at least an exchange of evaluations in the plenary session.
Question for this exercise:
- Where does the source information come from?
- How can the truthfulness of the source be classified?
- Are there other sources that can be consulted to verify a certain information?
