Learning to google - how do I search properly?

In this lesson, students learn how to use search operators in search engines. By using different search operators the participants will learn how to use search engines more effectively.

Preparation

All you need for preparation is a PC and an Internet connection. Alternatively, this exercise can also take place on a tablet or smartphone.
The exercise sheets serve as additional support and stimulation.

Method / Process description

Note: Search queries in search engines can be specified and concretised by means of so-called search operators. Search operators are defined by the search engine provider. It can happen that individual search operators are deactivated by the search engine provider over time.

Basically the exercise can be carried out in different ways:

  • As joint group work in the plenum under the guidance of the lecturer. The lecturer goes through the exercises together with the participants. An analysis of the results and discussion of the observations is carried out in the course of the exercises in the plenum
  • As group work, in which individual groups work on the topic in parallel using the exercise sheets. The individual groups are encouraged to exchange their experiences and observations. At the latest at the end of the exercise there should be a discussion about the experiences and observations of all groups.
  • As individual work: Each participant works out the topic for himself on the basis of the exercise sheets. After each exercise, the teacher can have a short discussion about the experiences and observations.

Part 1 - Advanced search and search operators:

  1. Worksheet: Using the worksheet, the students become familiar with the search operators of the search engines Google.
  2. Discussion: The learners report their observations.
Which search operators are useful? Which search operators would learners use in the future?
  3. Optional: The learners should independently test the search operators in other search engines (e.g. Bing, Startpage, etc.) and report on their experience.

Part2 - Advanced features (e.g. limiting the search period and searching in other countries)

  1. Worksheet: Learners use the worksheet to familiarise themselves with further search options
  2. Discussion: The learners report their observations.
Which functions are useful? Which functions would the learners use in the future?
